Emerald Meeple Studio

About the studio

Good games grow through generous questions.

Emerald Meeple Studio began as a small weekly table where designers traded prototypes, listened carefully, and returned the next week with one better question. Today, we turn that habit into structured learning for creators at every stage.

Our history

The studio opened in 2017 inside a borrowed community hall in San Francisco. Eight designers showed up for the first session with half-finished decks and handwritten rule sheets. We kept the same format for eight years: one prototype per person, two hours of focused feedback, and a shared meal afterward.

By 2022 we had grown into a permanent space with a library of over four hundred tested games. The same spirit of careful listening now guides every course, workshop, and resource we publish.

Our mission

We make board game design education practical, welcoming, and specific enough to use at the next playtest. Our work respects experimentation while giving creators a dependable process.

Our promise

We teach tools, not formulas. A strong course should help you notice more, decide with evidence, and keep ownership of your creative voice.

Teaching philosophy

Observe first

Every session starts with silent watching. Students learn to notice pauses, energy shifts, and unspoken rules before offering suggestions.

Prototype quickly

We encourage paper versions within the first hour. Fast iteration removes attachment to any single idea and reveals what actually works at the table.

Share ownership

Feedback belongs to the group. No designer leaves a session without at least three concrete next steps chosen by the table, not the instructor.
